Red Deer Close-Up

A large red deer stag, photographed in low-key portrait style, using natural light. This stag is one I had been able to recognise and photograph several times over the course of a fortnight, and on this occasion he was kind enough to let me in for a rare close-up. For me it's the vulnerability I see in his face which makes this encounter special. Red deer stags are usually proud, bold, and regal in their posture, but here it's like he's dropped the facade to let us in for a more genuine intimate portrait. This photo was taken early in the deer rut season, when stags begin to separate from the herd.
